Discovery of auditory cells paves the way for new tinnitus treatments
Discovery of auditory cells paves the way for new tinnitus treatmentsThere are four different types of nerve cells in the inner ear. Researchers at Karolinska Institutet have recently discovered this. This could pave the way for new treatments for various hearing impairments, including tinnitus and sound hypersensitivity - but also hearing loss.(Photo: Stefan Zimmerman)
"Until now, it has been assumed that there are two types of nerve cells in our inner ear, of which the Type 1 cells send most of the auditory signals to the brain. But when a group of researchers at Karolinska Institutet looked more closely at the inner ear's nerve cells, they made a surprising discovery: Type 1 -cells actually consist of three completely different types of nerve cells. This means that we have four different types of hearing cells – with different functions."
