What causes tinnitus?

Tinnitus has many causes. One reason could be damage to the sense of hearing that occurs at high noise levels over a long period of time. Another is acoustic trauma, a sudden noise exposure, such as an explosion. Some medicines can lead to tinnitus. In addition, there are a number of other reasons.

What causes tinnitus?

The most common cause of tinnitus is damage to the tiny hair cells in the inner ear, which convert sound waves into nerve signals that are sent to the brain. These hair cells can be damaged by various factors, such as:

Loud noises, for example from music, machines or weapons
Age-related hearing loss
Earwax or foreign object in the ear
Ear infections or inflammations
High blood pressure or other vascular diseases
Thyroid problems or other hormonal disorders
Tumors in the ear or brain
Certain medicines, such as aspirin, antibiotics or antidepressants

When the hair cells are damaged, they can stop working normally and send incorrect or random signals to the brain, which interprets them as sound. This is what gives rise to tinnitus.
