Audio-guided cognitive intervention for tinnitus - An evaluation
In 2018, the Adult Hearing Unit in Region Skåne started an R&D project to test and evaluate audio-directed CBT on a small group of patients with tinnitus. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) has been shown to have high evidence and a high effect on tinnitus complaints and is traditionally given by a psychologist or psychotherapist. CBT given by audiologists focuses on tinnitus triggering situations combined with audiological knowledge.

Eight patients participated in this study. The evaluation is based on the answers to the Tinnitus Functional Index (TFI), VAS scales and an interview part. The results show a clear improvement in seven out of eight patients in terms of noise level, irritation and impact on life, as well as significantly reduced complaints of tinnitus. In the interview questions, the participants stated, among other things, that they felt happier, calmer and more relaxed, that they could manage their problems better and that they felt more desire for social activities.
Based on the combined experience available on the unit, it can be stated that tinnitus patients need access to a toolbox with different strategies to change focus, reinterpret difficult situations and to break negative patterns, thoughts and behaviours. In this endeavor, audio-guided cognitive intervention (AKI) is another tool that can increase accessibility for patients with tinnitus complaints. Expected benefit for the patient is an increased understanding of their thoughts, feelings, reactions and behaviors and how this can affect the mood and contribute to a better management of tinnitus.
