Tinnitus noise in the head.

Constant noise in the head: Could it be tinnitus noise and what can be done about it?If you hear a constant noise in your head that does not come from an external sound source, you may have tinnitus. Tinnitus is a condition in which one experiences sounds such as ringing, hissing, buzzing or whistling in the ears or head.

Tinnitus can affect one or both ears, and can be constant or come and go. It is a common problem that affects around 15-20 percent of the population, and is especially common in older people.

Tinnitus can have various causes, but it is usually linked to some form of hearing loss. Hearing loss can be due to aging, noise exposure, infections, injuries or other diseases that affect the inner ear or auditory nerve.

When hearing is impaired, the tiny hair cells in the inner ear can be damaged or die, making it harder for the brain to interpret sound signals. This can lead to the brain creating its own sounds that are perceived as tinnitus.

Tinnitus can also be caused by other factors, such as stress, anxiety, depression, medications (such as certain antibiotics, anti-inflammatory drugs or aspirin), blood circulation problems or nervous system diseases (such as diabetes, thyroid problems or multiple sclerosis).

Noise in the head?

If you have a constant noise in your head that bothers you or affects your quality of life, there are different ways to deal with it and reduce the discomfort. Some of the most common treatment methods for tinnitus are:

Tinnitus Retraining Therapy (TRT): TRT is based on the neurophysiological model that Pawel Jastreboff, American doctor and researcher, developed in the early 1990s. This model is of great importance in being able to understand how patients are affected by their tinnitus and why some experience it as very bothersome while others are not bothered appreciably. In TRT, sound stimulation is used which adds a broad-band noise at a weak level, so-called white noise , in combination with structured counselling, CBT, where the patient learns to manage his tinnitus using various methods that have scientific support and clinical anchoring. The goal of TRT is to reduce the person's negative reactions to the sounds that occur, such as irritation and discomfort.

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT): CBT is a form of psychotherapy that aims to change the way you think and feel about your tinnitus problem. CBT can help reduce the anxiety and depression that tinnitus can lead to, as well as learning strategies to deal with negative thoughts and feelings. CBT can be done individually or in groups, with the help of a therapist or online programs.

Hearing aids : Hearing aids are small electronic devices worn in or behind the ear to amplify sound. Hearing aids can help people with tinnitus who also have hearing loss, as they can make it easier to hear external sounds and thus reduce attention to the tinnitus sound. Hearing aids may also have built-in masking capabilities that can generate sound therapy. Hearing aids must be adapted to each person's individual needs and preferences.

Other treatment options : There are also other treatment options for tinnitus that are not as well established or evaluated as those mentioned above. These include medications (for example, antidepressants or anti-anxiety drugs), dietary supplements (for example, zinc or ginkgo biloba), acupuncture, hypnosis, biofeedback or transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS).

These treatments may have different effectiveness and side effects for different people, and should only be used after consultation with a doctor.

If you have constant noise in your head that could be tinnitus, it is important that you seek medical help to investigate the cause and get the right treatment. Tinnitus is not a life-threatening condition, but it can negatively affect your quality of life if not managed properly. There is no cure for tinnitus, but there are ways to relieve the symptoms and learn to live with it.

There are also support groups and organizations that can give you information and advice about tinnitus. You are not alone with your problem, and there is help available.
